Coin Design and 3D Sculpting

Collection of bas-reliefs for metal coins

This page showcases coin bas-reliefs that I have created since 2017 using various digital sculpting techniques. These 3D models are intended for reproduction in metal using techniques ranging from minting to engraving.

Minting production process

Stage 1. Creation of digital 3D models of the silver coins
Stage 1. Creation of digital 3D models of the silver coins
Stage 2: Engraving the dies using the 3D model file to generate the path

Creative process

From concept to 3D model, paying close attention to technical requirements.

Concept

When creating a coin, I start by discussing the client’s ideas and what they want to communicate. The concept could be based on a photo, a drawing or a description, either provided by the client or created through collaboration on an initial sketch.

Layout and technical specifications

I use these initial ideas to create a draft that helps to define the layout. At this stage, I also define any technical requirements, depending on the type of production required. For example, engraving has different requirements to microcasting, which in turn has different requirements to minting.

To ensure the precision required for state-of-the-art production is achieved from the outset of the 3D sculpting phase, it is vital to establish all specifications at this stage.

3D sculpting

Once the concept and technical requirements have been finalised, I create a digital sculpture of the coin. At this stage, I use various CAD modelling software programmes, chosen based on how well they suit the subject to be portrayed.
